For those of you who haven't yet encountered the music of Be Your Own Pet; they are a four piece from Nashville with an average age of 19. Their music is very loud, very fast and you will rarely find their songs stretching past the 3 minute mark. 2006's self-titled debut made up for the lacking in originality with sheer energy. The latest release(Get Awkward) whilst similarly inclined, doesn't quite live up to the promise of the first but it still promised a good live show. It was on the back of this that I went along to their gig in Whelan's on the 18th of March. In theory it was everything that I had expected; forceful and furious. The ultimate soundtrack to moshing.
However whilst this has it's virtues, the songs were churned out as such a rate that is was impossible to discern which song was which. Crowd pleasers like "We Will Vacation, You Can Be My Parasol", when one finally realised what it was, were over in, what felt like, 20 seconds. The set list consisted mostly songs from the new album with a few old favourites thrown in for good measure(well, as far as I could tell). "The Kelly Affair" and "Twisted Nerve" stood out as the best of the newer tracks.
As a front woman Jemina Pearl is a force to be reckoned with. Turning her head sideways at the microphone; she delivers a performance of unstoppable charisma and charms every last member of the audience. The band seems to feed from her energy; they thrash the songs from their instruments at 100 miles per hour. There was one minor technical glitch, however, the guitarist had to switch guitars when problems occured with the Gibson SG he had originally been playing.
Overall, the concert left the crowd wanting more, but perhaps not so much 'wanting' as 'felt entitled to'.

Since the strains of Dolly Parton first resonated around my nursery I have been addicted to music... says it all really. :]
