Do you want to make a hit film? Just take a weird sport, add an out of shape average Joe as the hero and then spice it up with some craziness. You now have a sport comedy. This applies to Blades of Glory, Dodgeball, Talladega Nights, and a whole bunch of other films. Balls of Fury follows in their illustrious footsteps as a ping-pong movie with Dan Fogler as the laughable hero. The plot is decent, but the jokes wear a little thin over the course of the movie.

Fogler plays the character of Randy Daytona. He is a former medallist in the world of ping pong who is recruited by the FBI to break up an underground tournament organized by Feng, a criminal mastermind and ping pong fan. It’s a decent excuse to get Christopher Walken in geisha outfits. They decide to bring in a blind master, Mister Wong (James Hong) to retrain Fogler for the deathmatch style tournament. This was basically just a way to add a bunch of little blind jokes into the film though. Maggie Q serves as the unlikely love interest which should really gross out anyone in the audience.

This is a really mediocre film. Robert Ben Garant was far too greedy with his jokes. This film feels drawn out at the short length of an hour and a half. The concept of an underground ping pong tournament is wonderfully ridiculous, and all of the actors pull off the craziness with a lot of style, but it just doesn’t work out that well.
