The Meteor Irish Music Awards took place in Dublin last Friday night. It was the eight time the awards, which are dubbed the mimas, were held.
Dara O’Briain was the host for the night having previously executed the same role back in 2004. 19 awards in total were handed out in what was a night to celebrate the best in Irish and International music.
Among those attending the awards ceremony was Westlife, Boyzone, Sinead O’Connor as well as Stuart Townsend and Charlize Theron who were also in Dublin for the Dublin International Film Festival.
Westlife picked up the award for Best Irish Pop Act for the eight year in a row and they also perform on the night. Louis Walsh’s other boyband or perhaps manband, Boyzone, performed on the night as they continue on their reunion.
Best Irish Male and Best Irish Female went to Duke Special and Cathy Davey respectively. The Best International Male award went to Bruce Springsteen. Amy Winehouse won the gong for Best International Female. This added to her collection of awards after she won five Grammy Awards earlier in the week. A successful week for the talented but troubled star.
More Irish awards were picked up by Aslan for Best Irish Band and Damien Dempsey for Best Irish Folk/Traditional Act.
The lifetime Achievement Award went to the Saw Doctors who have been together since 1986.
The Humanitarian Award went to Rose Donohoe, founder of the Rose Foundation. As part of her award she received a cheque for €100,000 for her charity.
The industry award went to the late Jim Aiken who died aged 74 last year. The concert promoter was responsible for bringing some of the biggest names in music to Ireland including, Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan and Justin Timberlake.
Others who performed on stage included The Saw Doctors, Cathy Davey, Gary Lightbody and Lisa Hanningan, and Sinead O'Connor and Republic of Loose, who performed a duet.
